The ultimate storage coffee table!

The Kai storage coffee table

Everyone loves hiding places, especially when it helps to keep things tidy. The Kai table is the ultimate storage coffee table and was designed by Naoki Hirakoso and Takamitsu Kitahara in Japan. The ideal storage solution to compact city-dwelling.

storage coffee table

Inspired by traditional Japanese puzzles, the Kai table is the ideal solution to the city-dwellers storage problems. Well, maybe not all of their storage problems, but those in the living room anyway.

The table opens up by way of all sorts of flaps and sliding panels to reveal multiple storage places to stash your magazines, remotes and who knows what else. It has got me wondering if it could accommodate all of your retro gaming consoles… but I suspect you’d only be ok if that collection consisted only of Gamecubes.

Fun, active seating. The Ballo stool

These caught my eye as a fun-looking, colourful stool. Based around the idea of an exercise ball, they require a little core stability.

“Ballo is a multipurpose stool for short-term, active sitting. Ideal for a variety of uses, settings and spaces, the Ballo stool is suited to home and office environments and everywhere in between. Perfect for pulling up a quick seat, surrounding a conference table or for use in a reception area, Ballo inspires activity. Available in seven colors, Ballo’s playful aesthetic complements any space while promoting healthy movement.”

Their marketing pictures are provocative of a fun, active and healthy working environment. Great to have a few of these kicking around the office being colourful as well as functional.

555 timer seat

What made me do this? It’s an idea I had a couple of years ago and had to have a go at it! I had the legs made 18 months ago, so I definitely couldn’t let them go to waste!

We wanted to make some interesting seating for our stand at Revival this year, to go with our Dual arcade table. Which would also have one of our Rubik’s Cubes on the other side.

555 timer storage seat

The arachnid IC was made from 18mm MDF, some timber sections to mount the legs to and the legs themselves being 12mm aluminium. I’ve documented my build below in case anyone else wants to have a go.

The assembly was achieved with a mix of biscuits and the use of the Kreg pocket hole jig.

One part complete after some filling and plenty of sanding. The pocket holes were also filled on the inside.

Timber sections on the inside were fixed again using the pocket hole jig and plenty of glue. These sections were used to mount the legs to on the base.

After fixing the legs, this was the first time I could see if it really worked as a shape. Slots were cut into the base section for the legs to come through.

The notch was added before I could start to finish it. The 555 was first prepared with 2 coats of sanding sealer, then 2 coats of primer. The final paint was then applied. The photo doesn’t really do it justice, but it was a dark metallic grey which gave it that graphite look of an IC.

Some text was then applied: ST UK, NE555N, AU0314 for manufacturer/country, model and date code.

What’s the point of having all that space inside if you can’t use it!

Here it is in place next to our arcade table at Revival 2014.

The over-sized 555 looked great at Revival this year. It really hit the right age bracket with all of the retro-gaming enthusiasts, many of which asked where they could buy one!

Pac-Man Ghost shelf

A couple of years ago we posted about a Pac-Man Bookshelf and now we’ve found the perfect addition to your Pac-Man inspired library. This ghost shelf is made by Barcelona artist Light Yourself  Up, great for keeping your books neat and tidy but even better for holding all your video game boxes.

The shelf measures about  76cm(H) x 71cm(W) x 10cm(D), and can be customized in other colors, you can even chose which direction the ghost’s eyeballs are looking. Me, I’d love to have a set of four, one each of Inky, Blinky, Pinky and Clyde hanging on my wall.

Light Yourself Up have a shop on Etsy where you can buy their Pac-Man Ghost shelf for £368 plus shipping.

Nintendo Controller Coffee Table

I’m sure you all know by now that we love interesting coffee tables here at surface tension and we think this Nintendo Controller Coffee Table is awesome. Created by designer Charles Lushear, from the Etsy store ‘The Bohemian Workbench,’ this nod to retro gaming is completely functional. So you can actually play your old favorites while sipping on your morning coffee.

giant wooden nes pad

Made using maple, curly maple, birdseye maple, burl, mahogany and walnut, the Nintendo Controller Coffee Table will cost you a pretty penny but the workmanship looks absolutely superb. Though the novelty alone is well worth the extra coin. Play one round of Tetris on the coffee-bearing control board and you’ll be hooked. Sure, it might be a little harder to get your thumb to the B button in time, but the fact that you’re playing with your coffee table should take the sting out of any low scores.

Available through The Bohemian Workbench Etsy store and priced at around £3,500 plus shipping. Charles has some great other pieces available including controller wall art, an Elmo ukulele and the Karl Pilkington table which as you would expect is shaped like an orange.

You can reach Charles through his website – www.bohoworkbench.com or his twitter handle BohoWorkbench.

Pac-Man-Table

Colourful, quirky and completely unplayable. But what does that matter? These are great snap shot of a game of Pac-Man built into a glass table top frame. I can find very little information on these amazing Pac-Man tables by carpenter, furniture designer and photographer, Thanasis Mokas.

Mokas is from Anthens, Greece and while I don’t see any mention of how to buy them I think this guy deserves a posting for creating such great tables.

Tetrified

This officially licensed desk lamp is not only Tetris themed, but each tetromino lights up when stacked on top of one that is already lit. That also means you have free reign to customize your light every single day you sit down at your desk, how cool is that!

This desk light is just the tip of the iceberg in terms of Tetris swag that was on display at the American International Toy Fair in New York a couple weeks ago.

The Tetris Desk Tidy Set is a Tetrified set of office supplies, including a double highlighter pen, pencil holder, pencil sharpener, eraser, memo pad, tape dispenser, staple-free stapler, and desk organizer. You can even take out your frustrations on Tetrimino-shaped stress balls.

Apparently there is also the Tetris Alarm Clock, featuring numbers that change using falling Tetrimino blocks but you’ll have to check out the link below to see that one in action.

All three Tetris products will be available this September. The Tetris Desk Light will sell for $50, while the Tetris Desk Tidy Set and the Tetris Alarm Clock will sell for $32 and $40, respectively. Let’s hope they make it over to the UK too!

Dining table with a spin

At surface tension, we’re all for multi-functional furniture. So we were very excited to see the Fusion Tables by Belgian manufacturer, Aramith.

They describe it as a dining table and pool table all in one, featuring a modern sleek design, unlike the classic, heavy looking, wooden tables we usually find at pool table stores. Managing to design a dining/pool table the pool player’s wife could live with… very much in the same way that we design our arcade systems to be partner-friendly!

fusiontable1.jpg

There is room for 6 to munch at with the benches, plus a couple more if you use the smaller seats at each end.
fusiontable2.jpg

You can choose from a range of cloths which cover the monobed slate.

2 guys playing pool

They claim to have introduced several technological innovations to solve some issues that remained: they eliminated the 5th foot under the centre of the table as well as the ball recuperator under the table. They dropped the classical 3 pieces natural stone, did away with the pending pockets and everything that was not ‘modern’ in order to obtain a contemporary and sleek design table. They developed the Easy Lift system to address the playing height/dining height difference issue, opted for clean lines and new materials such as metal, but also warm materials like veneered wood and natural stone, giving the table a stylish and luxurious but also very simple and sober-minded appearance.

Using the easy-lift system, it’s a doddle to raise it from 30″ dining up to 33″ playing height.
