First came the game, then the crisps, the street artists and now… the bling! Yes, that classic game Space Invaders has inspired Dutch designer Frank Tjepkema to produce sterling silver rings in the form of those classic aliens that so many of us spent many hours blasting.
Artist and Designer Frank Tjepkema (aka Tjep.), has a fun series of solid sterling silver rings based on the pixelated alien invaders in Taito’s classic arcade game, Space Invaders.
Made from sterling silver, the Invader Aiko ring is cast upon ordering and can take up to 6 weeks to be delivered. Like all good things it’s worth waiting for. Available from Tjep. studio for £160.00. There are a couple of other Space Invader inspired pieces in the collection.
OK so summer is not officially over yet but someone seems to have forgotten to tell the weather that and I’m starting to feel a little chill in the air. However, I’m a firm believer that every cloud has a silver lining and some cold weather means I have a good excuse to buy myself one of these very cool Space Invaders scarfs from Bits2Die4.
Available from the bits2die4 shop for approx £34.00 it’s made from 100% Merino Wool, making the scarf warm, comfy as well as very stylish. It comes in three different colors — I liked the blue-red-orange combo the best and will certainly be adding this to my winter wardrobe. Also available are the Pong scarf, Scramble scarf and Outlaw scarf each available in 3 different colours.
Swiss watchmaker Romain Jerome has teamed up with Taito to create these amazing Space Invaders watches that go a little above and beyond your average video game merchandising deal.
Two versions of the watch are available, one in black and white the other in colour.
If you can’t resist purchasing one of these fantastic Space Invader Watches you might need to hurry as each style is limited to just 78 pieces, in reference to the year the game was launched. Unfortunately no information on pricing has been released as yet, however with the steel casing of the watches “coalesced with fragments from the Apollo 11 capsule” and each invader on every watch hand-machined I’m guessing they’re not going to be cheap!
In honor of the 25th anniversary of Super Mario Bros, Nintendo released a retread of Super Mario All-Stars. Now, working with Nintendo, Converse is releasing some Mario-themed goods to aid in your treading. The Super Mario Converse All-Stars!
The first of the two Super Mario Bros Chuck Taylor All-Stars series will be released next month. The more scenic designs like the one above will start showing up on gamers’ feet in August. What I really love about these Chucks are all of the hidden bits – the coins on the outside flap, the ‘Thank-you Mario’ screen, the oh-so clever placement of the Invincibility Star on the back. Even the box is awesome.
Part of Converse Japan Summer 2011 Collection, the two Chuck Taylor All Star Hi retail for JP¥ 8,190 (or £63) with a release date around July. The Chuck Taylor All Star Double Upper will retail for JP¥9,240 (or £71) and set for launch in August. No confirmation at this time over the collection’s release elsewhere outside of Japan…Mamma Mia!
I love these! Be prepared for inconspicuous nods from passers by as they approve of your same passion for all things retro-gaming. Available in before and after the power pill as Inky, Pinky… plus some new ones that maybe didn’t make the cut for the game all those years ago.
Available to buy from lowrez.de for around 20 Euros along side hundreds of other designs of arcade cabinets, game characters, screenshots and references.
